It is either from subdomain boundary to overlap or vice versa.

Set-up of the distributed grid subdomains overlaps is taking the actualy applied periodic boundary conditions into account.

There is no overlap if the periodic boundary conditions are applied within one MPI process.

Subdomain overlaps for the periodic boundary conditions is set only when periodic neighbor is not the same MPI process.

bad interpretation of lower and upper overlap.

   -rename directions to ZvYvXv, where v is m,z,p
   -correct y direction in 2D

The exception is not used anywhere and does not make much sense.
Functions/methods which are not implemented yet can just throw
std::runtime_error wich a more specific message.
